Even though I thought that this time I would keep blogging, I again failed to keep the promise to myself. So I should repeat .I suck. Anyway it's been eight months since I blogged last time and I hope I can break the curse this time for sure. Before that I should at least keep a log of what did I do in the past eight months, or I should have a retrospect on 2010. So I thought of writing this yearly roundup before the New Year begins. So here goes...

After the last post, which I did bought some goodies; I kept going on my dreams throughout for this year. On November 2009 where I graduated from Open University, I thought of doing some stuff for the next year before starting a new job which wants me on 24 hours a day. So I came back to the University for a Research Assistance Post, which I got some kind of a freedom over my previous job @ Virtusa. Even though the salary was not that great (Hey, where is?) I had time to do some stuff that I was longing for several years.

Goal 1: More FOSS work, more community work
In working with the university, I got a chance to work with several parties which were also had the same idea in intellectual property rights. Neglecting my co-partner Vajira, who worked with me in the university in most of the below events, on front, was Mr. Janath Geeganage, which was my direct supervisor in the research at university. His eagerness in this area helped me a lot to work seamlessly on FOSS work throughout this year. And also the backup from Dr Udugama, eventhough hes not a FOSS geek, helped us a lot. In the starting of the year we did an Ubuntu repository installation for Ubuntu 10.01 within the university premises to be used within the university network. And with the equipment that we had in the research lab, we started to experiment with distributed environment with the FOSS. In the mean time, even though it’s not much, I did some community work myself. Attended to Openoffice 3.2 Sinhala QA day @ ICTA was one of fun events we had.

at the end of Hard days work

In the same time I managed to get to know with Mr. Dileepa from the Mathematics and Philosophy Department. Even though he’s not a tech person, he was and is more motivated than most of us. And with his and Janaths immense help, we did several events within the university. First one was an IPR+FOSS workshop for the university staff. It went smoothly and we had lots of good comments on that.

Hands on workshop

Then with the request of Dr Delkumburewatte, Myself and Vajira did two workshops for the Colombo divisional IT teachers and this was a great success with lots of comments and I personally loved it.

Checking some Hardware specs

Then came the Open University 30th anniversary. As with the request of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, myself and vajira with Janath, we organized a department stall for the exhibition that was held in every regional Centre of the university. As usual, we did manage to include Foss in the content of the exhibition and where ever the exhibition was held; our stall did attract lots of attention. And also in most of the centers we did get lots of help from the regional Linux User-groups. My heartfelt gratitude goes to all of them.

Group demonstration

Then comes the most eventful event of the year, The Software Freedom Day 2010. In collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, we organized a Software Freedom day full day event at OUSL consisting of Lectures, Quizzes and lots and lots of events. Even though we initiated it, we had lots of help (Actually they did the hard work) form our junior batches from the university (Great to see the new batches are starting to contribute a lot for the university work). Thanks Manoj, Naveen and all others who made that event a success. With the funding from ICTA (Athula), we did a successful software freedom day which we had lots of fun and it was a great event.

Software Freedom Day 2010, Most attended event in auditorium for a long time

also in the end of the year we did a presentation on FOSS to the global head meeting of the NGO, Practical Action. Same as always it was also a great success. So that was the summary of the FOSS and Community work that I participated in 2010. Generally I’m happy about my contribution.

Goal 2: Trip to India, (Himalayan)
In all my dreams I never thought that I would be able to run for this. But I did. I finally had a trip to Himalayan, in a hiking style. Myself and my friend Kasun had a 17 day trip to India, which basically covered at least 2/3 of Indian subcontinent. When I say covered, I mean just gone through: D. So in end of July we started by going to Chennai from a flight (We wanted to go from a ferry, but it was not available @ that time). Then the same day we took the Thamilnadu-express train to New-Delhi that almost took us 3 days. Then from New-Delhi to Manali, which was damn beautiful and after a day there, we took off to the Himalayans, from Manali-Leh road by a two day bus. It was amazing. The best time of my life. Everyone should @least visit there once. When we finally reached to Leh (Near Tibet- in Himalayan ) I got sick due to reduced oxygen concentration on my blood. After a night @ hospital and a tank of oxygen I was dispatched, but I never recovered until we again came back to Manali after three days. Then from Manali we took some amazing train routes back to New-Delhi and to Agra and finally after 17 days back to Chennai. The tour was damn hard as we only ended up 3 days in hotels from the whole 17 days (All the others we were on the go. :)). But it was a lifetime experience and it worth every damn penny.

on the top of the world

Goal 3: Gadget of the Year 2010: Home Satellite system
From the start of this year, I was eager to get a satellite TV system to my home. I was stuck between Dialog-TV and Peo-TV as they were the only providers in srilanka. I never wanted to watch movies, as I knew the shows that runs on TV stations are pretty old compare to what we download. But I wanted some documentary channels such as Travel and Living, NATGeo, Discovery, History Channel, etc... But Dialog or Peo never gave me a good package and at that time I met Wanigasekara who was already a satellite expert in my opinion and he gave me the virus of getting my own satellite system which we can use for FTA or subscription based. So I started my new goal. Even though I wanted satellite system I didn’t had a good TV, so I wanted to buy a new one. As CRT is not a option now, I wanted to go for a HD LCD, LED was too much costly and didn’t thought it will be useful as we didn’t had much HD content either. So after several months of planning and research I bought a 40" Sony EX400 LCD panel. After it, myselfI and my father did some work and we came up with a TV stand to place it. Then with the help of Wanigasekara I bought a Satellite system and finished the full system. So now I have a full multimedia home theater system with me. Frankly if you ever watched a full HD content like NatGeoHD or Discovery HD world, you will find the whole expenses is full worth.

HDTV, HD Satellite receiver, Wifi router, PC, DVD player

Even though they are not serious ones that I needed to complete in this year, there were several other things that I wanted in this year. I wanted to get a permanent job in the end of this year and in this December I got the job of Network Manager in OUSL, so it worked out well too. The only thing I couldn’t do was my MSc. I wanted to start my MSc in this year and I tried both moratuwa and Colombo universities for their MSc. But from both I was never short listed due to lack of experience. But no regrets as I didn’t really tried hard this year for a MSC, (even though it would have been nice to get one). That is due on 2011.

So basically Year 2010 was a really good year for me. most of the things that I wanted to , I did. what else can one asks for. So 2011 will be whole new year. Basically I don’t have anything that I wanted to do which was due on 2010.

Thank you 2010, I enjoyed every bit of you .
Finally there is one thing that I learnt from 2010,
“Dreams are free, if you don't even dream, why do you live?”Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-49553530749582213312010-04-07T01:00:00.000-07:002018-09-11T03:22:08.207-07:00Past, Present and Future

Even though I have started several times to resurrect my blog for the past year and a half, I always ended up with notice about starting and again go silent for a month or two. But This time Iḿ serious and trying hard to resurrect the blog. I have changed my template to a more nicer one and thought of first blogging some flash back about the past year. There has been a lot and even from them, several points stand out shouting that they are worth posting.

First of all I have completed my Undergraduate degree that I have been doing for the past five years. Damn that was a relief. And also I have resigned from my job at Virtusa and was recruited in to the University it self as a Research Assistant to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Personally I like the new job as it involves more stuff that I like to do, new things to do in everyday and most importantly more relax and freedom.

Next I have bought some gadgets and stuff for me in the past year and they have been great. first of all I bought a netbook which I was longing for a long time.

Itś a Asus eeepc 1005HA. I really love this little guys as itś very handy and portable. you don´t need a large back pack to carry it around. It weights around 1.2Kg and that's hardly a weight for me. It has a 1.6Ghz intel atom processor and I have customized it to a 2GB Ram when the time of the purchasing. No need to tell about Camera , Mic , USB etc.. as they are basic for a netbook. And the best feature is the battery that lasts 10.5 hrs according to the specs and from my experience it normally goes to 8.5 hrs normal use in Linux (UNR). The default OS , windows XP actually lasted around 10 hrs on the first day I purchased it. Normally battery performance in windows is better in windows as all the proprietary hardware drivers are optimized. But I can easily satisfied with 8.5 hrs in my Linux system. If I use the system for a watching continues movies/videos then the battery only lasts around 6.5 hrs. But as I know that's normal. Even though this duration of the battery is really enjoyable and I have never needed even to take the charging kit with me. Finally , eeepc is not a performance daemon, but still it can run all the applications that I needed.

Next I bought a New Desktop PC as my last desktop was around 5 years old. This time I was targeting for a Gaming rig as even the past machine was enough for me to do all the other tasks. as a matter of fact , the reason to buy both a net-book and a Desktop was a huge decision. First I wanted a good pc with portability . But unlike most of my friends , I have fully understood that a laptop can´t fully replace a desktop (if its not a Alienware branded :D). And for the specs that I had would have cost me around 1.5LKS to buy the laptop that I wanted. But also as it cant be used to replace a desktop , I decided to purchase a good Desktop with a economical net-book which when summed that cost me around 1.3 LKS both. Therefore finally I bought a new Desktop that was targeted to a gaming rig. Even though I said it´s a desktop , I only purchased the Processor (Q9550- Intel Quad), RAM (4GB), MB (Intel) , Graphics Card (N9800GT) and a kick as Power supply which gives me pure 650W power in to the system. (Yeh it actually takes that much , my poor old UPS is not even can handle it :D ). All the other parts such as HD I have used from the previous one. To start and to test the system I have completed Crisis on it with full res with all the options turned on to max and the system did not even blinked during the extensive fights (Which I won using a Cheat :D ).

The the other thing that I purchased quite recently (Still only one month old ) during the past season is a Android powered smartphone , which I was looking forward to purchase for a long time. After the purchase my faithful SE K750i , I did not had any requirements on a phone. But I always wanted a smartt phone which I can use to brows net , blog , twitt etcc. on the way. Therefore as I found a opportunity purchase it from Malaysia, I purchased this little handy item. A HTC Tatoo running android 1.6 (Which was a most recent release and the first budget phone by HTC ). Its a really nice piece of gadget and I really like the android OS which was extended to a magically more greater os by the HTC sense UI. It contains all the high end features of the Popular HTC Hero, while it replaces the Hero capacitive touch by a more budget friendly capacitive touch. This difference is a huge different when it comes to the responsiveness of the phone, but still that gave me the budget to purchase the smart-phone, anyway , touch sensitivity is not that bad at all. (I never had a problem , it works great for me :) ).

Among all these things, nowadays I´ḿ trying out with Sinhala typing and therefore most probably I will blog sometimes in sinhala too. But that's for future, This post has been really long and really boaring and sounds more official manner and now Im fed up with the post :D . Fairly
speaking it has not gone good. First of all I'm back with my trust
worth Fedora 9 . And as for the Cantos, I have some suggestions on my
own to anyone who wants it [ :-) ] .

First of all , I must tell you that in my whole article I'm not saying that the reason to my re transition was that the Centos 5.2 is bad. So keep reading in open mind.

Installation

The first time I tried to install Centos 5.2 DVD, after it has collected all the informations, The installation got stuck in the middle of the process saying that the media cannot be accessed due to some reason. I downloaded the DVD using torrent and therefore I did not try to hash chek it. So I was supprissed and tried again. This time I completed the media check feature and My DVD came Clean. Therefore I tried agian with the installation and This time it went through. Other than this small incident (mostly due to the DVD Drive) , I really enjoyed my familier anaconda installer (Red Hat system installer). It was bit outdated to the Latest Anaconda version in the Fedora 9 . But It was expected.

First boot

This was also the same as Fedora first boot. It asks soome general questions and finally restarted. But at the end, it greeted me with a new Centos Login screen. I was thrilled to continue and just logged in to my new system. There was a small bit of information that i forget to mention. That was that the initial system was unable to identify my Default Screen resolution (1440 * 900 - Wide Screen ). But it was not a high critical thing as I already know how to correct it when i logged in.

In Gnome

First thing that I tried was to correct my screen resolution . It was defaultly set to (1280 * 1024). And when finally I changed to my prefered Screen resolution (1440 * 900) I restarted my X-server in order to gain new Screen resolutions. But to my dismay, the Screen resolution came back again to 1280 *1024 . I don't know why didn't it got changed. But I tried several times and even afterm a restart , it didn't came to my prefered screen resolution. Then I thought it was a problem in my video driver and I just skip it to check the other stuff.
Thats where the problem started. I opend up the firefox and it was FF3-beta5. But aftr browsing the net for several minuets, I started to find that the firefox and the nautilus are startingto get heavy and they started to get more fat nad non responsive. This is a situation that I'm familiar with my Fedora 9 and This is th emain reason that i started to get a new Distro .And also by spending several hours on the new system, I found that Centos 5.2 is exactly same as the initial installation of a Fedora 7 ( I hav use the Fedora 7 for a time in the past ).
And Finally I got in to the conclusion that Centos 5.2 can be a stable distro. but it's still same as Fedora 7. And as for a Desktop distro Centos cannot be a good distribution for me . Because I already have Fedora 9 and now I'm pretty sure now that the problem is not in fedora , but in the Firefox 3.
So I just Delete the Centos partition and Came back in to Fedora 9.

Conclusion

First of all I'm not telling that the Centos 5.2 is not stable or anything like that. I'm only telling that it is not for me.
By trying the Centos , I expected a change such as WindowsXP vs Windows 2000 , But fairly speaking theres no such different between Fedora 9 and Centos 5.2.
I'm sure that centos is more stable than Fedora 7 . but speeded my machine as I was expected.
So finally I'm again at Fedora 9 . :-)

PS :- I found the problem in Firefox 3 that was causing the fat in Fedora 9 (or in any other distro). I'll post another post on that asap.

Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-50426459605023212112008-06-24T23:31:00.000-07:002008-07-02T00:25:17.114-07:00Fedora 9 ? , Centos 5.2 ? - Part I

As you probably guess now, most of my articles are about Fedora and Probably you should know by now that I' m a very much Fedora Fan boy. The thing is I like the idea behind the Fedora project [Cutting Edge technology] and also behind the Redhat [ Fully Free ].

Therefore I really like the Fedora Distributions and Finally I was able to fully switch to the world of Linux by abondening the Windows era. [ Thanx for the Fedora 9 ].
But there's a problem that I can not overcome easily. That is my machine is not very up-to-date. As already you guys know Fedora is known as a little resource requiring distro.

So even in the most sad mood I decided to switch to a less resource requiring distro.
As we Linux guys already know, now comes the most difficult question.

"What's the Distribution ?"

As usual there are lot of alternatives to chek when it comes to a distrobutio selection.
For me , It should be Stable, less resource required and must be Damn fast. Therefore after about a weeks research, I short listed in to two Distros. Newest Centos 5.2 & PCLinuxOS Gnome 2008.

Finall I decide to tryout Centos 5.2 as It' a direct clone of RedHat 5.2 which recently released and I already is familiar with "Yum" and all the things in Fedora. I know RedHat 5.2 and Centos 5.2 are already outdated by theire appliactions. But anyway I can Manage my applications on my own. I don't really need a package manger that update automatically. And Yum is great if you have little skills .

Therefore currently I'm downloading the Centos 5.2 DVD and due to the slower net connectivity it'll be two days before my journey begins.
I'll post a review as soon as I tried Centos. So keep in tune.

Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-2304265977020461142008-05-19T08:22:00.001-07:002008-05-23T06:57:43.785-07:00Race Started , Vote Now. - Ubuntu , Fedora, openSuse, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS , Mint, Debian...

As I said in the previous post, The past few months were the most exciting time of the Gnu/Linux. From the day when I first installed my first Red hat System, I´ve been hearing that the year of the Linux desktop has come. Every year we believe that it is the Year of Linux Desktop. But as the mass popularity to the Windows XP , that day was postponing to a uncertain date. But last year a Miracle happened. After So many years of development, Microsoft has released there newest OS Vista.
I think the release of Vista had a major impact on Gnu/Linux´s popularity more than the day Linus himself released the first version of his tiny kernel .
Even more, Microsoft hadn´t stopped from it. Just after that great help, they announced the Discontinuity of Windows XP on later 2008. So as now, the day has come. 2008 is the Desktop year of Gnu/Linux. Its now for sure as it is currently backing by a major Software company on the world [Microsoft inc.]
Therefore, every Major vendor, started from their full potential to create the ultimate Gnu/Linux desktop. Because of it, every day we hear about a release of a new version. [go to Distrowatch ad check the Daily news- they are full of them]. Some Like Fedora has even started to release customised versions for every specialised fields [Spins]. Therefore now we got full of distros to check and hack. But as we already know, we cannot check every distro by our self. So I thought, why not we get together and try them. therefore, I´m starting a poll to check ¨Who has got it right ?¨.
I tried to add every major distribution with their latest version, Some are betas while some are finalised versions. but almost every version is stable enough to check. So I ask you to contribute to this poll from the way you can. Please kind enough to vote the Best version that you think that has got the path to the ¨Ultimate Desktop Linux Version¨ correctly.

Please Note that this is not a poll to check , what's the best disto. [Every Distro is equally weighted in their specialities]. The poll is only to check the best version currently running.

Please do not vote just to get your favourite distro to the top. Vote Once only and Vote with reasons.

Please Comment on the facts , that you have Voted on your choice. Fedora 9 [Sulphur] has been released. The Most awaited version of the Fedora series. It has also been even Rescheduled for the sake of itś quality. Even During this Busy Days, I haven't Forgot to Download ASAP it was Released. This is my Journey...

The Download -
I have been fortunate to get the Fedora ASAP it was Released [before the Rush Began]. As there were less seeders at the beginning, I Used the http method to download the ISO [DVD]. But as my internet speed is not super fast, It took me 20 hours to complete it. The Downloading was uneventful unless for some several Refused connection to the servers as the more rush comes in. As my one of my previous post suggests, I didn't trusted the http download. Therefore I Checked the Downloaded DVD using the Torrent ISO and , fortunately there were some bytes missing from the ISO and it saved a Blank DVD from me.

Installation -
I Burned the DVD to a blank ,and Popped the DVD in to my DVD ROM. As soon as the machine booted, I was greeted by a familiar boot menu of Fedora. I choose the New Installation Method and Directly went to the ANACONDA [The system Installer of Fedora]. The Installation process was not changed a lot from the Fedora 8 unless to a few changes in partitioning options which I haven't tried. I´m a huge fan of Gnome and Never Really switched to the KDE. But as the new KDE 4 was a very promising one, and the Fedora 9 was the Only official distro that fully supported it, I chose to try it. So I Selected the both Gnome and KDE 4. As usually Fedora 9 took around 45 mins to complete the installation process [I really can´t understand, why do they take such a Big amount of time]. Finally , It was time to Reboot. So I did.

The Login -
As soon as the system booted, I was greeted with the familliar booting menu of Fedora with a little more darken blue theme of loading. Just from a little time, It took me to the Login menu where i have to select the user. I was very thrilled to try the new KDE4 , therefore I selected the Session as KDE and pushed the login button. The Splash screen and the login theme was great. It was a very pleasent welcome from my favorite distribution, From there on , I tested every corner of the KDE4 that I could find as fast as I can.

The Betrayal -
First of all I must tell you that KDE4 was indeed a great improvement from the KDE 3.5. But at the end, I Just hated it. I´m a guy of little fancy requiring. The KDE 4 was very much improved in this area. But even though the topping was greatly carved, the inner parts are still look like boxes with Sharp edges. It is true that the Title bars and all the front parts are very nice, but the backgrounds are very old looking and it did not pleased me. I know this is very unfair for a great DE. but it´s the way with me. What to do? But still this doesn't applies to others. And I didn't even checked the performance of it. So KDE lovers, just grab it and try it. This is only a comment from a Gnome lover. [Just neglect me :-)]. As now I´m very unhappy with the situation, I hated to thought that even I had installed this KDE with my gnome box. So after some deeply considerable moments, I finally decided to take the necessary actions [I haven't even logged in to Gnome yet.]. I decided to Re-install the Fedora9 ,. This time, without the KDE4. So it be. It took me another 45 mins to complete the re-installation.[How silly am I? I could have Just remove the KDE4. But that's how I am.]. But as now I think about the incident, I think it was a punishment to me for betraying my Gnome box in the first place.

The Promised Land -
After the [re]installation, I was again at the login screen with selected session as Gnome. The first impression was again very pleasant as the welcome theme music was great [I´m really in to these kind of Stuff]. I really enjoyed it. Again I checked every feature that I like in my Operating system and it all were working properly. According to me, Every feature is just perfect. Not too much or not too less with the bleeding edge of the tech. That´s how I like. Following are some of my best features.

Firefox 3 Beta 5 [by Mozilla]

World Clock Applet [by Gnome 2.22]

Just the Corrrect amount of effect by the compiz. [Again, not too much or less]

Specially the new Package Management tool.

The New System Updating interface.

Package management Handling which was a headache from the previous versions.[the new one is Correctly managing the multiple Package Requests]

and so on....

First few hours -
Even the new Fedora 9 is a out of the Boxed version, Still I have some of my own requirements. So I Spent the First few hours Tweaking and installing them. Here are my list of them. Other than this, I needn't to do anything to the default system. It was and is still perfect.

Removed Transmission and Installed Deluge [bittorrent Client]

Installed Audacious [A Winamp like small media Player]

Installed VLC -player, in case of an emergency. [But still uses Totem]

Installed Skype

Installed Liferea Feed reader [Really needed a light weight News reader to keep at every time running]

Installed Wine [Ha Ha ! Don´t think it will be needed, But, Still...]

And Wallpaper and a Icon theme [I just love them]

Here is a Screen of my Desktop
After these, I now have a fully working, personalized Operating system at hand and I dont think it will have a Rival until for another 6 months [Till fedora 10 :-)]

Advise ! ( :-o %#2 %@^ %$!@@!|@@#@~)
As you now already know, I´m a not very acceptable guy to give advise [Still I realy Hate KDE4]. But StillI have to try. ;-)
My Advise is that, if you are planning to switch to Linux, This is the time. There was not a better moment in the past and there will not be in the future. If you are not able to pay the price of Vista + It´s hardware Price, Then you should at now, be quick and find a place that you can take a break. This is the time. I´m not only talking about fedora 9. The New Ubuntu is out. The New Mandriva is out in the world. And Even the Mint has announced It´s new beta. So What are you waiting for. If you are ever going to switch, do it now. Every thing has a time. Don´t waste it.

PS : To Specially my Srilankan Guys. Guys I know that we had and are using the Windows XP , as we could purchase it for a very low price [Pirated Editions] - [Not to confuse, I´m still using an Original Windows XP version that has given to me by the Uni from the MSDN Acdemic Alliance Programme to do some Windows Specific tasks such as .net programming etc...]. But Do you know that they had started to raid the pirated CD´s in the open market where we buy our CDś . You know where I´m takiing about- [MC & UNITY ].So even at the time of writing of this post, there arnt even a single place you can buy a pirated Windows XP cd openly. So Think about the near future. Do u got $ to Buy vista? This is your time. Switch now or face the consequences.

Please feel free to place comments ...

Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-5739758333025591072008-05-18T07:25:00.001-07:002008-05-18T07:29:27.207-07:00Resurrection

It has been a Looong Pause between my previous post. I started to hack in every way I can to finalize a ultimate Linux box. But as more as I hack in to them , I got to know that even though I could produce a cool Linux box, it was heavy on my poor system. Therefore I looked in to the world of DEs to find a better solution and I was not impressed by most of the small DEs. as they didn't even produce a small amount of eye candy that I was looking for.
Then I found The "e". Mostly Known as "Enlightenment". From that day, I was keen to test It. But It was not an easy task at that time. "e" was not on the repositories of the main distributions and there were no binaries to install directly. Therefore I could not install it. But after these many years I'm again on to the quest of Installing "e" to my perfectly running Fedora8 Box. Even after all these years , Its Still not an easy task to directly install it using normal package managers. Therefore I Thought I would compile a Guide to explain my steps in this procedure.

So , Here goes. "

Even you can install "e" from several Famous repositories, They always install the latest Stable release. Currently "e16". But I went for the newest release which still in developing stages - "e17". There is no official way to install "e17" without the cvs version which I have to Compile - That would take ages -. Therefore I found another way to install "e17" on to fedora 8.

Step 1
- Installation of Required repositories -
Download and Install repository maintained By Professor Kriehn. This is a Unofficial repository .

But Its very easy and safe- Download From here.

Download and Install livna repository - Download From here.

Step 2
- Installation of Additional Packages.
Which Will be needed as Dependencies. But Thanx for the Help you gave me. And I must Thank my Friend Januz for the help he gave me. Hope to Blog soon.

Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-56495370346422299292008-03-22T10:40:00.000-07:002008-03-22T11:08:33.410-07:00Digg this Digsby - Messenger or Pandoras Box?
Today, a Messenger is an essential software tool that we need to continue our day today life. Most of us are addicted to it and because of it, most of us are registered in several messaging networks, for an example Yahoo, MSN , AIM, Google talk etc... Therfore we got several friends that span around these all networks and therefore in order to be in contact with them, we need to use all of these messaging networks. Probably You already know what I'm going to hit this time.

Yep , That's the Point. In need of these all networks, we need to Install all of their native messenger clients in our machine [Using the webmessenger is not an option... :-)] . and anyone who use these clients know how much resources that they require to present their eye candy to us [even though Google talk uses less memory , we need other clients too]. and having contacts around several clients is a headache for a hardcore chatter. Therefore we need a solution that will help us in this matter.

Sure! MSN supports Yahoo & Yahoo supports MSN & also Google talk supports AIM etc... But is there a way to integrate all of this? Yep! I know its already there, Trillium and likewise. But trillium isn't free. You have to pay for the Pro version. And there is a open source solution too , and a great one, which I highly recommend - " Pidgin " . But lets face the truth, there are few drawbacks in pidgin,

1. It doesn't supports Audio and Video
2. It doesn't Supports Skinning :-) - Don't be Ashamed, You know It's true.

So where are we now? To answer all these questions, we have a new Promising Solution. Its not Perfect. But It's a very promising one.

"Digsby". This is the Magic word.

Digsby is a new MultiProtocol Messenger Client , currently supporting Yahoo,MSN , Google , AIM, Jabber , ICQ ...And not only it supports Messaging, it also has integrated supports for the Social networks that we use, such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter etc..Following are some Major features of DigsBy

MutiProtocol Support

Yahoo, MSN , Google , AIM, Jabber , ICQ .. Some of the steps in this guide are taken from the above sources and credit should go to respective authors.

Step 1 : Getting the sources

Create the directories for the KDE install. I chose to setup KDE in the /opt directory.

su -c "mkdir -p /opt/kde4/kde/src"

Give full access to the kde4 directory temporarily

su -c "chmod 777 /opt/kde4"

Download the KDE 4.0.2 source tarballs from http://kde.org/download/ to /opt/kde4/kde/src
The required tarballs for a basic install are :

http://download.kde.org/stable/4.0.2/src/kdelibs-4.0.2.tar.bz2
http://download.kde.org/stable/4.0.2/src/kdepimlibs-4.0.2.tar.bz2
http://download.kde.org/stable/4.0.2/src/kdebase-runtime-4.0.2.tar.bz2
http://download.kde.org/stable/4.0.2/src/kdebase-4.0.2.tar.bz2
http://download.kde.org/stable/4.0.2/src/kdebase-workspace-4.0.2.tar.bz2

Extract the tarballs

for i in *.bz2; do tar -jxvf $i ; done

If you're a neat freak like me, get rid of the tarballs to make it look pretty :)

mkdir tarballs && mv *.bz2 tarballs

Step 2 : Setting up the environment

Copy the sample .bashrc file from http://techbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Getting_Started/Increased_Productivity_in_KDE4_with_Scripts/.bashrc and append it to your existing .bashrc

We need to make some changes to the .bashrc to reflect the directory structure we require. In the KDE section, change the KDEDIR as follows:

export KDEDIR=/opt/kde4

Comment out the Qt section entirely. We are not building Qt from source.

#export QTDIR=$HOME/qt-copy
#export QT_PLUGIN_PATH=$KDEDIR/lib/kde4/plugins:$QT_PLUGIN_PATH
#export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=$QTDIR/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH

Assuming you didn't have anything in .bashrc before you copied over the .bashrc from KDE.org, scroll down to line 52 and make the following changes.

export KDE_BUILD=/opt/kde4/kde/build
export KDE_SRC=/opt/kde4/kde/src

Save changes and exit.

Source the new .bashrc

source .bashrc

Now lets install some of the prerequisite packages.

sudo yum install clucene-core-devel libxml-devel libxslt-devel \
dbus-devel boost-devel bzip2-devel openssl-devel alsa-lib-devel \
redland-devel rasqal-devel raptor-devel hspell-devel aspell-devel \
cups-devel xine-lib-devel avahi-devel gamin-devel OpenEXR-devel \
enchant-devel jasper-devel ilmbase-devel pcre-devel gpgme-devel \
libxklavier-devel glib-devel libusb-devel libsmbclient-devel \
libxcb-devel NetworkManager-devel lm_sensors-devel libraw1394-devel \
bluez-libs-devel gcc-c++ libXext-devel cmake subversion giflib-devel \
libpng-devel libXdamage-devel libXcomposite-devel libXrender-devel \
fontconfig-devel libXft-devel libXcursor-devel libXfixes-devel \
ruby-devel libXScrnSaver-devel libkdcraw-devel exiv2-devel \
lcms-devel libtiff-devel sqlite-devel libxkbfile-devel \
imlib2-devel patch gstreamer-plugins-base-devel

sudo yum install strigi strigi-devel

sudo yum install qt4-devel qt4-doc

sudo yum install blitz blitz-devel qimageblitz qimageblitz-devel

Step 3 : Build..build..build.

Finally it's time to build everything. The magic command is cmakekde. I illustrate the process below for kdelibs.

cd /opt/kde4/kde/src/kdelibs-4.0.2
cmakekde

You need to repeat the above process in the following order:

kdelibs-4.0.2
kdepimlibs-4.0.2
kdebase-runtime-4.0.2
kdebase-4.0.2
kdebase-workspace-4.0.2

If you're building other packages, the process is the same and the order does not matter.
Expect to spend about 1 to 2 hours to compile only the basic packages. (Depends on the speed of your computer)

Step 4 : Setup a new session

Assuming the build process went without any glitches, it is time to setup KDE4 as a login session.

su -c "cp /opt/kde4/share/apps/kdm/sessions/kde.desktop /usr/share/xsessions/kde4.desktop"

If you have an older version of KDE on your machine, to avoid confusion do the following change to /usr/share/xsessions/kde4.desktop

NAME=KDE4

Now you're all set. Logout from the current session and login again, but this time select "KDE4" as your session.

Trivia

Maybe it's me, but I couldn't find a link to the control center on the Kickoff menu. If you have the same problem, do the following:
Press Alt+F2 and type "system-settings" without the quotes and press enter.

KDE4 has some cool Compiz like effects. Be sure to enable visual effects to see them in action. Some key combinations to try are Ctrl+F8, Ctril+F9, Ctrl+F10
Some mouse gestures also work. For example, move your mouse over to the top left corner to get a Mac Expo like effect. I am sure there are many more, but this should be enough to get you started. Have fun !

* All Images are properties of their respective Owners

Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-19596264040914581922008-03-06T03:20:00.001-08:002008-03-06T03:33:46.913-08:00We are in War . Most of you guys probably using a one too. Anyway, isn't there were any times that one of your friends has called you and asked the directions for a ATM nearest to him as he want to get some cash in a hurry. or hasn't there been any incident that you are in a new office or a place and you want to get some cash but you don't know the location of a ATM ? isn't it frustrating that you have your money, but don't know where to get it in a hurry.

Heres a great trick that you can try to locate a ATM that has the "VISA" service. This service is provided by the "VISA" as a service to there customers. But even if you don't have a VISA card, you can try it. The only thing you have to do is to , go to the Site given by the address at the bottom of the post , and select the required country and type in the city you want to search, and whaaa ! you get your address with the bank details and every thing.

The great thing is, it woks for all the small cities in every where in the world. I tried this several times and it always gave me the details I needed. Some may think that this is very stupid as , you may think where can we find the access to the internet in a hurry. But think it like this. If you are in a hurry and there are no access to the internet, you can call one of your friend that has the resources and ask him to search for you. and anyway in srilanka, there will be some what difficult to find a place that hasn't got a net-cafe. So , yep ! It is practical . All you need to do is to set a bookmark on the site address and then you need not to worry about the ATM locations anymore.

Address :- http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/global/

Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-60362385119234147992008-02-05T07:25:00.001-08:002008-02-05T07:45:28.318-08:00Saving Days Of Downloads - Method of Guranteed downloadMost of you people using the internet are using it for surfing the net. But there is also a major percentage who use the internet for both surfing and downloading files. These downloads can be from simple 2KB pictures to 4.5GB ISO s. And to do this kind of huge downloads, surely you are using a download-manager more than the simple browser file saving function. Most of us use a Download accelerator to speed up the process.

But as you already know, after downloading several days ( For some persons only), after on the completion of the file, you may discover that the downloaded file actually is corrupted and all your efforts in the past few days has been wasted. This hapens to you because of the file transfer protocol you used. If you use a single click download such as a normal download accelerators use, it uses the simple web surfing protocol (http) to download the file. This protocol is actually designed for surfing the worl wide web and therefore it doesn't guarantees the transfer of the file and it does not include a function to check the contents accuracy of the file. Therefore for secure and guranteed downloads, you must use another specified file transfer protocol such as "ftp" or "bit torrent". But there is a small glitch in it. most of the files found on the net are not accessible via a ftp-server ( or most of us don't know how to find it) and as it guarantees the file transfer , the download takes more time than a normal http transfer. and also if we take the bit torrent, it does not have the function of a download accelerator and most of the time, it's more slower than a normal ftp transfer (does not applicable if you do know how to setup it correctly). Therfore we need a alternate method to securely download our files.

The answer is a combination of two above mentioned methods. (http + bit torrent). first you can use a normal download accelerator to download the file as speed as possible , without thinking of the accuracy of the file. Then after you have finished, check the file using a Hashing algorithm such as "md5" to verify it. (Those who doesn't know anything about a hashing algorithm, just run the file and check if it works). If it works correctly, then you don't need another step. you are done. but if the file is corrupted or damaged, then go to the next step.

As an example I'll use the Fedora 8 DVD image as the file to download. Just after you completed the normal file download, you will have the following file on your hard Drive.

"Fedora-8-i386-DVD.iso"

Then you discovers the file is corrupted and you have to download it again. At this point don't download it again. Just Google the file name and the word "torrent". it will direct you to a torrent file to the required file. for this example , the same page i downloaded the fedora direct download file has the torrent file also. Then use a torrent client such as utorrent to download the the same file . But wait ! you don't need to download the same file again. just wait till the utorrent creates the file (allocate) in the hard drive and stop the download.

Go to the file allocated location and check weather the file "Fedora-8-i386-DVD.iso" is allocated again as a new file. Then you just have to Overwrite this existing blank file with your previously downloaded corrupted file. Make sure the two files are same (or this wont work). And then go to the torrent client and restart the file downloading process and observe the magic. Torrent client will find the existing file is already downloaded and will hash check with the original file's hash from the server and will find the missing parts in the whole file.

After it completes the check, it will starts to downloaded the remaining to download parts and will complete the file in no time. When this download completes, the file is guaranteed as a fully functional file.

This methods has brilliantly worked for me and saved me several times. Only glitch is that you have to find a torrent file that has the same file as yours. But What the hell, the best file sharing method currently is "bit torrent". so no worries. the file will be there.

This trick was found by me from a Blog post. One of the Misses most of those who transfered from the WindowsXp has, is the lack of the eye candy of the media handling that winxp has. Those who transfered from the Winxp Media centre will feel the worst case. Not that I'm Saying the winxp media centre is good. but the truth is that Totem or any other media player lacks the sweetness that has the most windows versions of media centers. But , that time is now over. I here by Introduced to the New Kid on the block. Elisa. The Brand new Open Source media center .

Elisa is an open source cross-platform media center solution designed to be simple for people not particularly familiar withcomputers. Elisa is a creation of the Famous Fluendo. Itś a story about a Soviet Sniper who emerged on the time period of 1942-43 on war at city of Stalingrad. Jude Law as the main character Vassilie Zaitsev , found his rival of the German camp face to face in order to uplift their own camps moral.
Even though the story starts as a WWII war story, it continuous to a passionate love story, a story of jealously , Bravery and a keen plot of cat-&-mouse.
The story unfolded all there is to suck my attraction in to it. and at the final, just got off me from my seat. Other than the historical event alterations, the film is a must watch category . And any way , why the hell do we want a history lesson , when we already know them. and Itś always good to see a movie that don't care about the war, but the story.
One thingś for sure . the future movies lost a front seat on my top list for a long time. And I give a 9/10 and also a good salute to the Director.
If you want some details , go to ¨http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0215750/¨Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-9678702847135737862008-02-01T06:45:00.000-08:002008-02-01T07:16:22.203-08:00GNOME 2.20 Released

The popular Desktop Gnome, has released it's newest release, Gnome 2.20. Google Offers this amazing new service to all persons, without any
subscription. Just like Google Search. Only thing is it's still in beta (Haha ! isn't Gmail is still in beta?)

You can just call the required International Phone number (Don't worry. It's free) and just say what
you want. it's that easy.
and again, if you want, they will send you an Text message to your cell phone with the details of the
business that you searched.
It's not over, If you are really keen on finding that place, then you can order a map to the place.
It's that simple. Just like that.

Sadly, it's only available in USA only. The Newer versions of the Acrobat Reader are like Opening the 3DS-Max. you know What I mean? Damn, Its Too bulky for a day today Application.
Here Are some of my Favorite features that I hate Adobe Acrobat.

* Damn Cool But Bulky splash Screen
* Heavy Memory Usage
* Frequently Update Feature that plugs in to the Startup, every time You removes it.
* To Start the Applications Decently, need to launch a crappy Speed launcher at the Boot.
* Un-necessary Features Loading at Every Time i Open a small PDF
* Even Small PDFs cannot be handled decently Without Hurting the system.

I don't argue that the Adobe Acrobat Reader isn't a nice PDF reader. Think it's the best on the planet. But , What do we actually use it for? Just to view a PDF?
It's even too much for even Bill G. So what Options do we have?
In fact! We do have a Option. Rather a great one. I have Used it Several Years and , Damn It's Small.
Have you Heard a PDF reader called "Foxit Reader"? If you have, then you know what I mean, (If you haven't, then theres the link :- http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php)

Here are the features That love The Foxit Reader.

* It's Free.(Not Open source)
* Doesn't got a Splash Screen.
* Very light on the system.
* Got almost every feature that Adobe got.
* No Startup launchers,Update services, etc....
* Starts in a Flash.
* Can Handle even Larger PDFs very efficiently.

And anyway, it can read the PDFs , thats the only thing I want From Adobe Acrobat. Therefore I give my Full faith to the "Foxit Reader 2.2 "
So , Now it's your chance to check it. I don't say that you should use it. I'm only saying you should try it.
Check it for yourself.
At the end, Just "Just Foxit The Acrobat"

Dasunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578348459043499876noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6891578630060689677.post-65062896249177257682008-01-29T11:35:00.000-08:002008-01-30T10:42:05.590-08:00WelcomeHey Guys, This is my first post on my personal Blog. The main idea of wrinting a blog was to collect and gather all my findings on the internet.
